FRIDAY Field Trips

Step back in time and discover one of Tasmania’s most unique heritage attractions at the Salmon Ponds. Nestled within beautiful English-style gardens near New Norfolk, this historic site is the birthplace of trout in Australia and the oldest trout hatchery in the Southern Hemisphere.

During this field trip, you’ll enjoy a personalised guided tour led by an Inland Fisheries Service Field Officer, who will share expert insights into fish culture, hatchery operations and the site’s fascinating history. You’ll also have the opportunity to see and feed a range of trout species on display, alongside Atlantic salmon.

The visit will also include access to the Inland Fisheries Service flow-through system, located in a separate facility on the Salmon Ponds grounds. This facility may house additional non-display native species, potentially including giant freshwater crayfish, pouched lamprey and short-finned eels. Closed shoes or boots must be worn to access this area.

Attendees will also visit the Water Monitoring Station, with further information about this component of the field trip to be provided shortly.
